Totti suspended for three matches © EuroFootball.com

By decision of the UEFA disciplinary committee, Italy's national team defender Francesco Totti will have to miss three European Championship matches.

The captain of AS Roma spat in the face of Danish player Christian Poulsen during Monday's match, which ended in a goalless draw for Italy against Denmark.

At first, this incident went unnoticed, but later a Danish radio station posted photos on their website. Then the Danish Football Association decided to report it to UEFA, and this decision was supposed to be announced today.

"For rough unsporting behavior, especially for spitting at Danish player Poulsen, we have initiated disciplinary proceedings against Francesco Totti," was stated in yesterday's UEFA statement.

Today, the disciplinary committee decided to impose a three-match suspension on the player. Therefore, he will not play in the matches against Sweden and Bulgaria, and if the team advances, in the quarter-final match. The Italian Football Association will lodge an appeal against the decision tonight.
