The match started cautiously and the Swiss were more active. The English played on the counterattack and in the 23rd minute, Owen, finding himself free on the edge of the penalty area, passed the ball to Rooney, who headed it into the goal.

Then the Swiss team pressed the opponents to the goal, but did not create any dangerous chances as the England team demonstrated impeccable defense. The best opportunity to score came to H. Yakinas, but his shot from 18 meters flew just beside the goalpost.

After the break, substitute Daniel Gygax almost immediately threatened the English goal, but his header was a bit too strong. With an hour played, the Swiss situation complicated, as for a rough foul, Bernt Haas received his second yellow card and was sent off.

With fifteen minutes left, Rooney scored his second goal - receiving a pass on the edge, he adjusted the ball and shot it into the goal. The ball hit the post and rebounded off the goalkeeper's head into the goal.

In the 82nd minute, Hargreaves received the ball in Beckham's penalty area, passed it to a free Gerrard, who without any interference sent the ball into the net. This crushing score remained until the end of the match.
