The Nations League quarterfinal series, which determines Lithuania's opponent in the World Cup qualifiers, began with a dramatic tie.

The Netherlands played to a 2-2 draw at home against the Spain national team.

In the 9th minute, Nico Williams put the European champions ahead.

In the 28th minute, Cody Gakpo equalized. After the break, the Dutch quickly took the lead again – Tijjani Reijnders scored.

In the 81st minute, Jorrelis Hato received a red card for a rough foul, giving the Spaniards an opportunity. Seizing their chance, the continental champions equalized in stoppage time with a goal from Mikel Merino.

The return match will take place on Sunday. The loser of the pair will enter the World Cup qualifying group, which includes Lithuania, Poland, Finland, and Malta.
