One of the most renowned defenders in Germany in recent decades, Mats Hummels, is retiring from professional football. The German announced this on social media.

His career did not start on a bed of roses – a product of Munich's Bayern youth system, he attempted to break into the first team in 2007 but was unable to overcome the competition.

The following season, the player was loaned to Borussia Dortmund, where he played until mid-2016.

He then spent three seasons with Bayern, and from 2019 to 2024, he played again for Borussia.

Last summer, the veteran struck a deal with AS Roma, which became his final club in his career.

The 36-year-old player can boast many titles: he triumphed five times in the Bundesliga, finished as runners-up in the UEFA Champions League twice, and won the German Cup nine times.

The crowning achievement for the German was the triumph at the 2014 World Cup.
