Although the recent meeting of the UEFA Discipline Committee decided that the photographs allegedly capturing Switzerland's forward Alexander Frei's hit on England's defender Steven Gerrard are not convincing, the player's problems have not ended there. The Swiss television channel SF DRS showed new photos, from which it seems that there are no doubts that Frei really spit at the England national team's defender, although he denies it.
After the publication of the new photos, UEFA submitted an appeal to its disciplinary committee. Today, a temporary decision was made to suspend the Swiss player for fifteen days, so Frei will definitely not be able to play in today's match against France. Switzerland still has hopes of reaching the next stage of Euro 2004, and if they manage to do so, the appeal will be reviewed this week, otherwise only after the championship.
