When the Italian national team returned home, sensationally withdrawing from the European Championship after the first stage, the fans of this football giant country blamed only one person for this failure - head coach Giovanni Trapattoni.
The influential Italian sports newspaper "La Gazzetta dello Sport", although expressing many contradictory thoughts about the level of Scandinavian national teams, in speculating about Trapattoni's future, wrote only one sentence - "Trapattoni ended his career in our national team yesterday."
The coach himself confirmed that his contract expires on July 15th and that it is unlikely to be renewed. The most realistic candidate to replace the coach is considered to be Marcello Lippi. He has not commented on these rumors yet.
Friday is likely to be the last day for Franco Carraro, president of the Italian Football Federation. He was the only one who wanted to see G. Trapattoni in the head coach position after the similarly unsuccessful World Cup in 2002.
