Former German national team player and one of the leaders, Rudis Völler, has now also become a former coach. After an unsuccessful performance with the German national team in the European Championship, he decided to step down from his position.
After losing a match against the Czech national team, which is not the strongest team, the majority of Germany's criticisms were directed towards Völler. Even the press writes that as a coach, he does not understand his job.
The 44-year-old Völler believes that the national team needs a fresh start before the 2006 World Cup, which will take place in Germany: "I feel that only someone with an untainted reputation and strong credibility, like I had four years ago, can do this job in the next two years."
The president of the German Football Federation (DFB), Gerhard Mayer-Vorfelder, regretted the coach's decision: "He told us that it was not a sudden decision, made immediately after the match. However, we are very sorry for this decision, but we have to accept it."
It is believed that the vacant national team coach position will be filled by Otmar Hitzfeld, who is currently not coaching and was recently released from his duties as coach of the Munich club. Among the candidates are also Greece's coach Otto Rehhagel and Christophas Daumas. Meanwhile, Rudi Völler is likely to take over the coaching duties at Leverkusen.
