The goalkeeper of the Italian national team announced his retirement from the team. The Milan goalkeeper decided to step away from the national team after the disappointment of the European Football Championship, where Italy, although not losing any matches, did not advance to the next stage.

Toldo had to settle for a secondary role in this European Championship, giving up the position of the main goalkeeper to Gianluigi Buffon.

The 33-year-old goalkeeper revealed that he had made this decision before the European Championship, as he wants to dedicate himself more to his club.

"I hoped to end my career with a beautiful victory," Toldo says. "But the disappointment of the failure in Portugal cannot overshadow my memories. I spent wonderful 11 years in the Italian national team, experienced great and deep feelings and gained experience that I will never forget."

"Now I will focus only on Inter club. I made this decision before Euro-2004, but I didn't want to reveal it until now. I am 33 years old, and I think it would be best if I step aside and give opportunities to the next generation."

"But I leave Italy feeling strong - Italy is in safe hands with Gigi Buffon, he showed great form throughout the championship."

Toldo achieved his best times with the Italian team in 2000, when the team lost in the final to France after a very dramatic battle.
