It happened as expected - the former coach Luis Aragones Suarez became the head coach of the Spanish national football team. In this position, the 66-year-old Spaniard replaced Inaki Saez, who resigned after an unsuccessful performance in the European Championship. Spain started the European Championship with a victory against Russia, but then followed draws with the tournament surprise Greece and a loss to the tournament host Portugal. The "Mallorca" club already dismissed the veteran coach from the remaining contract on Monday, sparking speculation about Aragones's appointment to the position of head coach of Spain. The Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) formed a committee of nine people, which decided that the ideal candidate to fill the vacant position is Aragones. The coach signed a two-year contract with RFEF, which will end after the 2006 World Cup in Germany. "I want to confirm that Luis Aragones has become the head coach," said RFEF president Angel Maria Villar. "He will lead the team for two years, and the contract will end after the 2006 World Cup."
