On Sunday, the last matches of the 29th round of the French championship were played, where the teams of Marseille and Rennes met.
In case of victory, the Marseille team had the opportunity to rise to 5th place on the tournament table, pushing down a team that unexpectedly lost 0-1 to the underdog.
However, the players of Olympique failed to take advantage of this gift from their opponents and lost to Rennes after a very tough battle with a score of 4-3.
Without a doubt, these were the toughest matches of the round. Throughout the game, one team or the other dominated the field. The score was leveled three times.
Laurent Battles' successful shot in the 30th minute pushed Marseille ahead. However, their lead was short-lived. Just 5 minutes later, Marseille's attacking leader Didier Drogba sent the ball into his own net.
3 minutes later, Rennes took the lead. This was achieved by Alexander Frei, who defeated the Olympique goalkeeper in the 38th minute.
The score was once again level in the last minute of the first half, when Didier Drogba scored his second goal, but this time in the correct net.
After the break, in the 60th minute, the same Alexander Frei defeated Fabien Barthez again. Marseille didn't take long to respond, equalizing for the third time in the 72nd minute. This was done by the Egyptian forward of Olympique, Mido.
But it was definitely Alexander Frei's evening. In the 74th minute, he scored another goal, completed a so-called hat-trick, and secured a 4-3 victory for his team.
After this victory, Rennes climbed to 12th place in the tournament table with 36 points, while Marseille remained in 6th place with 46 points.
