Today one of England's newspapers "Sun" writes that the captain of the England national team and Madrid star David Beckham almost retired from the great football after a particularly unsuccessful performance in this year's European Championship in Portugal.

In the "Sun" article, a close friend of the Beckham family is quoted: "David was very serious. He told Victoria that he wanted to leave the world of football."

"David said he didn't see the point in playing on after such a poor performance (missing 11-meter penalties against France and Portugal - ed. note)."

"However, Victoria accompanied him to the room and they talked for a long time. Thank God, she managed to convince him. David is very stubborn, and at that moment he was so sad that he couldn't see any other way out of the situation."

"Victoria was as strong as a rock. She convinced David that he had already experienced worse times, such as when he received a red card in the 1998 World Cup match against Argentina."

"Victoria said: "David, you are the captain of the England national team and I am very proud of you. You must show them what you're worth.""
