Today, at the Darius and Girėnas Stadium, the return leg of the UEFA Champions League first qualifying round took place, where the teams Kaunas FBK "Kaunas" and "Sliema" met. The victory was achieved by the Kaunas footballers with a result of 4-1. The first match between these two teams in Sliema was also won by the Lithuanians (2-0).
Before the match, a minute of silence was held to honor the former famous football player Valdemaras Martinkėnas, who passed away yesterday in Slovenia.
The match began with attacks from the team from Kaunas, while the guests rarely visited the our team's half of the field. The advantage of the Lithuanian club was evident and soon the first goal was scored into the Maltese goal. After breaking into the penalty area from the left side, Andrius Gedgaudas struck precisely and brought the team from Kaunas ahead. It is worth mentioning that the Lithuanians won all aerial duels and it was only due to luck that the Maltese players did not pull the ball out of their own goal after corner kicks. As the first half was coming to an end, the Kaunas team finally utilized their advantage and Darius Sanajevas doubled the score with a strong header after a corner kick.
The second half began slowly and it was only in the middle that the team from Kaunas again attacked the Maltese goal. During one of the attacks, Saulius Mikoliūnas jumped one-on-one against the goalkeeper and easily beat him. Following this goal, Rimantas Žvingilas appeared on the field, who soon had a hundred percent chance to score. After a pass from his teammate, the forward sprinted alone against the goalkeeper but shot straight at him, much to the disappointment of all the "Kaunas" fans, and the score did not become 4-0. Nevertheless, the "Wanderers" managed to score their goal in the Champions League. After a penalty kick from about thirty meters, Micheal's shot ricocheted into the goal defended by Eduard Kurskis. However, Rimantas Žvingilas did not falter and in one of the last attacks of the match, passed the ball accurately to Marius Žaliūkas, who, scoring from ten meters, left no chance for the Maltese goalkeeper.
The match ended with a score of 4-1, and the overall result of the two matches (6-1) allows "Kaunas" to continue their fight in the Champions League qualifiers. The next opponent of FBK "Kaunas" will be a Swedish club, which last season became the Swedish champions for the second consecutive year. It is worth noting that, unlike in Western countries, the championship in Sweden, like in Lithuania, is currently underway, so "Djurgardens" should be in excellent form and could be a very tough opponent for the Lithuanian champions.
