Uruguay's national team, torn apart by internal conflicts, defeated Colombia, the defending champions, 2-1 in tonight's final and took third place in the "Copa America 2004" tournament.
Colombia 1 - 2 Uruguay
3' [0 - 1] F. Estoyanoff
70' [1 - 1] S.D.H. Month (11-meter penalty)
80' [1 - 2] V. Sanchez
Only after a penalty shootout against Brazil in the semifinals, the Uruguayans managed to prove themselves. In just the third minute of the match, Estoyanoff put Uruguay ahead and Colombia needed almost 70 minutes to equalize.
That was done by Month, scoring from the penalty spot. However, the result of the match was decided after ten more minutes - Sanchez scored the winning goal.
Uruguay, one of the favorites in this tournament, fought in the "Copa America" final for the second time in a row - three years ago, they lost in a penalty shootout to the Honduran national team.
