UEFA Intertoto Cup third round matches have been played and six semi-final pairs have been revealed. Twelve teams will compete for a place in the final, where it will be possible to win a place in the UEFA Cup.
The biggest surprise was the failure of the 1997 Champions League winner Borussia Dortmund - the German club had won the first match against Genk in Belgium by a minimal margin, but unexpectedly lost 1-2 at home and was eliminated due to the away goals rule.
An interesting meeting took place in Moscow, where local Spartak played a high-scoring draw with Villareal and was eliminated from the tournament because they lost in Spain. Another Spanish club, Atletico Madrid, lost at home 0-2 to Slovak Zlin, but progressed due to a 2-4 victory in the first leg.
