Portugal national team defender Fernando Couto agreed to stay at AS Roma - he extended his contract with the club for one year.

"I always said that I would not choose another team without talking to Lazio first. I met with the new president Claudio Lotito and we reached an agreement - it made me happy. I wanted to stay here, and now I'm just thinking about the upcoming Italian Super Cup match in Milan," Couto said to the club's official website.

The 35-year-old veteran started his career at FC Porto, in 1994 he moved to Parma, where he spent two years before moving to Spain and playing two seasons at Barcelona.

In 1998, Couto moved to Lazio, and during the six years spent at this Italian capital club, he won the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup, the UEFA Super Cup, the Serie A champions title, and two Italian Cups.
