The winners of the last tournament in the previous season, the footballers who won the Copa del Rey, fought for the Spanish Supercup title against the champions of Spain. In the second leg match, they defeated the UEFA Cup winners 3-1. In the first leg in Zaragoza, "Valencia" won 1-0, but suffered a loss at home by a bigger margin. Without their leaders Roberto Fabiano Ayala (participating in the Olympics with the Argentine national team) and Vicente, the Spanish champions conceded a goal as early as the 11th minute. The score was doubled in the 33rd minute by last year's Copa del Rey hero Galletti. Although in the 53rd minute, the new "Valencia" signing Bernardo Corradi scored a goal from about 12 meters to reduce the deficit, the 82nd-minute goal was contributed by the new "Zaragoza" signing Javi Moreno. After the match, Valencia coach Claudio Ranieri admitted the opponent's superiority: "They deserved the victory a bit more than us. Zaragoza played better and really surprised us with their goals. We had quite a few chances in the first half, but we failed to capitalize on them, and it cost us dearly." This was Zaragoza's third Supercup final: in 1994, they lost to Barcelona, and in 2001, they were defeated by Real Madrid.
