The coach of the Argentine national football team, Marcelo Bielsa, unexpectedly stepped down from his position. His decision, announced yesterday, shocked the entire Argentine football society.

During a press conference, M. Bielsa explained that he no longer has the energy to continue his work. "The reason for stepping down is very simple," he said. "I no longer have the energy required for successful work as the coach of the Argentine national team."

"I started thinking about this about ten days ago, after the victory against Peru in the South American zone World Cup qualifying match."

He also added that the president of the Argentine Football Federation, Julio Grondona, understanding the situation, did not try to change his decision.

Julio Grondona himself stated that the coach's resignation was very unexpected for him and everyone else. The results of the Argentine team were very good, and just a month ago they triumphed in the football tournament at the Athens Olympic Games.

Currently, the leading contender to take the vacant head coach position is Carlos Bianchi, the coach of "Boca Juniors." The position was offered to him even after the unsuccessful 1998 World Cup, but at that time the coach refused the job.
