Former Real Madrid forward Emilio Butragueno was officially appointed as the club's sports director on Wednesday.

The 41-year-old Butragueno replaces Jorge Valdano in the position, who resigned in June, shortly before Florentino Perez's re-election as president.

Butragueno, better known as "El Buitre" (the vulture), became a symbol of the team that won five consecutive championships (1986-1990). He played more than 560 matches for the club and scored 217 goals.

He represented the Spanish national team in 69 matches, scoring 26 goals, and is the third all-time top scorer for the national team, behind only Raul and Fernando Hierro.

Another former Real Madrid player, Michel, declined to take on the former role of Butragueno's assistant sports director, stating that the club did not listen to his plans or offer a serious financial proposal.
