FIFA announced that more than 3 million spectators attended the 62 World Cup matches held so far.
The 3 million mark was surpassed after yesterday's second semi-final between Spain and Germany. It is reported that on average, about 49 thousand fans have been attending the matches in the tournament so far.
With this result, South Africa only trails behind the World Cups held in the United States in 1994 and Germany in 2006.
Despite a significant number of spectators in the stadiums, FIFA regretted that there were quite a few empty seats in some matches.
Empty seats were also visible in the semi-final between Spain and Germany, but this was influenced by the fact that due to excessive congestion at one of the airports, five airplanes carrying about 400 fans to Durban, where the match took place, did not take off.
When they finally arrived at the stadium, many were disappointed as the match had already ended.
