After the lost World Cup final, the coach of the Dutch national team, Bert van Marwijk, criticized referee Howard Webb, but admitted Spain's deserved victory.
In the chaotic match, the English referee showed yellow cards to 13 different players and sent Dutchman Johnny Heitinga off the field.
"I don't think the referee properly controlled the match," said the specialist. "Both teams made a lot of mistakes. Perhaps it's a pity it was like that in the final, but the best team won."
The only goal in the end of the second extra time was scored by midfielder Andres Iniesta.
"I'm not one to look back and analyze what the referee did," added van Marwijk. "I think the stronger team usually wins.
"But if we look at the second opportunity Arjen Robben had, he should have shown him a second yellow card and sent him off the field.
"It was a very important moment - just before the end of regular time. It's a shame, but that's sports. I will repeat again, the Spaniards were better."
