The television audience survey, which is conducted by the company "SIC Gallup Media"/TNS using the TV meters method, shows that almost 80 percent (2.6 million) of Lithuania, 74 percent (953 thousand) of Estonia, and 64.3 percent (1.4 million) of Latvia residents watched the World Cup group matches broadcast from the Republic of South Africa.
This year, the World Cup matches attracted more viewers to the television screens than the football championship four years ago. Football matches are becoming more and more popular not only in Lithuania but also in other Baltic countries. Of course, the most viewers were attracted to the final matches, but overall statistics of the World Cup viewership show that football is gradually gaining a steady audience in Lithuania," said Gytis Juodpusis, director of "SIC Gallup Media"/TNS.
In Lithuania, sixty-four matches were broadcast during the World Cup. The average audience of these matches was 4.9 percent, almost 157 thousand viewers, and for each match, at least temporarily, 433 thousand Lithuanian residents tuned in.
The most popular matches, attracting the most Lithuanian viewers to the television screens, were the World Cup final match between the national teams of Spain and the Netherlands. The average audience of these matches was 14.8 percent, almost 477 thousand residents. The second most popular in Lithuania were the semi-final matches between the national teams of Spain and Germany, with an average audience of 13.7 percent, almost 440 thousand residents. Meanwhile, the least popular matches of the World Cup in Lithuania were the matches between the national teams of Paraguay and New Zealand, as well as Honduras and Switzerland. The average audience of these matches was just 0.9 percent, up to 28 thousand Lithuanian residents.
The World Cup final match between the national teams of Spain and the Netherlands was mostly watched by Estonian residents. The average audience of these matches in Estonia was 17.4 percent, in Lithuania 14.8 percent, and in Latvia 9.4 percent of residents. At least one minute of the World Cup final match was watched by 26 percent (845 thousand) of Lithuanian residents, 24 percent (521 thousand) of Latvians, and 27 percent (345 thousand) of Estonians.
