The South American zone matches of the World Cup qualifying stage were played, in which all victories were won by the home teams, increasing the intrigue of the competition.

The biggest surprise was recorded in Ecuador, where the local team forced the World Champion Brazil to surrender. Taking advantage of their opponents' failure, Argentina defeated Venezuela and rose to the top of the tournament table.

Meanwhile, in other matches, Uruguay defeated Paraguay and now holds the fifth position, Colombia pushed Bolivia into the outsider position, and Peru tied with Chile.
