FIFA has confirmed that in the upcoming season's Champions League tournament, the field referee will be assisted not only by two linesmen, but also by a couple more referees standing next to the goal lines.
The system of five referees was tested in the last season's Europa League tournament, but controversial situations still occurred when decisions made in the penalty area, after reviewing the video footage, were incorrect despite the presence of the nearby referees.
Furthermore, FIFA has confirmed that the issue of goal-line technology will be discussed this October.
