Heiko Westermann signed a five-year contract with Hamburg club on Wednesday.
The 26-year-old German, who missed the German championship due to injury, has represented the Gelsenkirchen Schalke team so far, which will receive approximately 8 million euros in compensation.
According to Westermann, the decision was influenced by the fact that he will be able to play in his favorite position in Hamburg: "I want to play as a central defender on a regular basis. Hamburg's team was looking for a player in this position, so I believe I can shine."
England's Sunderland was also interested in the defender.
