Strategist Roy Hodgson admitted that he wanted to bring back Sami Hyypia, who represented the team for more than a season, but negotiations with Leverkusen's Bayer were unsuccessful.

The Finnish player, who spent a decade at Liverpool, moved to Germany last summer and played in 32 matches in the country's national championships.

"I am disappointed, but we couldn't bring Sami back," Hodgson said. "He is very important to the Bayer team."
