After head coach Jose Anigo stepped down from his position on Wednesday, today club general director Pape Diouf announced that Philippe Troussier should take Anigo's place.
Diouf stated that the team hopes to have a new coach in place by the weekend and believes that Troussier is the right person to help the club at this time.
"We need a brave and experienced person," said Diouf. "Troussier is exactly the person who can help us."
Former coach of the Japanese national team, Troussier has recently been linked with the national teams of Wales and Scotland, but now seems prepared to return to club football.
French coaches Jacques Santini, Jean Tigana, and Bruno Metsu also were candidates for the position of head coach at Marseille, but the club chose Troussier. An official announcement is expected to be made this weekend.
Marseille also officially confirmed the resignation of club president Christophe Bouchet. He, like Santini, left the team on Wednesday.
