"London security Michael Essien announced he will take a break from the Ghana national team.
The defender suffered a knee injury during the African Cup of Nations tournament in January, and was unable to help the team for the rest of the season, also missing the world championships.
"I think I need a break," Essien said. "It's not a complete withdrawal from the national team, just a time-out for a while. I need time to think about everything. I don't know if my decision will disappoint anyone, as the team looked great even without me."
