The winning goal for the hosts was scored by forward Darren Bent from the penalty spot after Micah Richardson's foul in the penalty area during added time by the referee.
In other matches, Aston Villa and Liverpool both secured narrow victories, while the Bolton vs Birmingham duel ended in a 2-2 draw.
