Rafael van der Vaart does not consider his career stage at Madrid club to be a failure and insists he does not expect a guaranteed place in the starting lineup in London.

The English team acquired the Dutchman for a relatively modest sum of 10 million euros on the last day of the transfer window, just a few hours before it closed.

"I don't think I was very unsuccessful in the 'Real' team," van der Vaart said to "TalkSport." "I always gave my all to both the club and the national team. Now I have come to 'Tottenham,' so I want to prove my level."

"Several teams were interested in me, but I wanted to wait for the best option. I knew I had to leave because I didn't see any opportunities to play. The decision was made easier by the fact that 'Tottenham' will play in the Champions League."

He added: "I don't think I will have problems adapting to English football. In general, there are many great players in the London team, so it won't be easy, but I am looking forward to this challenge."
