The most famous European coaches support the five referee system and are inclined to try it out before the goal-line technology, announced UEFA.

However, there is no intention to consider changing the away goals rule, even though many believe it encourages teams to play more defensively during knockout matches.

The five referee system was tested last season in the Europa League tournament and will be applied this year in the Champions League and in the qualification for the European Championship.

"The coaches evaluate the experiment positively," said UEFA technical director Andy Roxburgh after a two-day meeting with strategists such as Pep Guardiola, Sir Alex Ferguson, Jose Mourinho, Claude Puel, and Felix Magath.

"They all understand the problems that would arise if we started implementing technologies. Coaches, like UEFA president Michel Platini, want the game to remain as human-dependent as possible, and additional referees allow that," Roxburgh continued.

It is expected that the additional assistant referees working behind the goal lines will help reduce the number of incorrect decisions in the penalty area.

Speaking about the away goals rule, Roxburgh said: "We raised this question because after forty years some teams started to think that a 0-0 result at home is positive because the opponents did not score an away goal.

"However, this has been the case for 40 years, it is rooted and has become part of the game. We should leave it as it is."

And he added: "Nevertheless, coaches questioned whether the away goals rule should also be applied in extra time."
