Bad news reached the London club - striker Jermaine Defoe will be out of action for not six weeks, as previously expected, but up to three months.
The footballer underwent foot surgery, so he will only be able to appear on the field at the end of this year.
27-year-old Defoe got injured while representing the England national team in a European Championship qualifying match against Macedonia.
If the rehabilitation lasts as predicted for three months, the striker will miss a total of 13 English championship matches and the entire group stage of the Champions League.
