Yesterday (Friday) were played the 17th round matches of the French football championship "Ligue 1". After a series of unsuccessful matches, last year's European shocker "Monaco" finally managed to secure a victory at home against "Rennes" with a score of 2-0.
However, the result could have been completely different if the referee had counted Alexander Frei's goal in the 20th minute, when he directed the ball into "Monaco's" goal with his head, but the linesman flagged offside for the Swiss.
Although the goal was disallowed, it seemed to give "Monaco" team some extra strength. Initially, Mohamed Kallon scored a great goal in the 29th minute to put his team ahead, and just two minutes later Javier Chevanton doubled the score, beating the opponent's goalkeeper.
Despite the "two-minute tragedy", "Rennes" still tried to resist and even had chances not only to soften the result, but also to equalize - several times Kim Kallstrom found himself one-on-one with "Monaco" goalkeeper, and Olivier Sorlin's shot in the second half was pushed away by the opponent's crossbar.
After this victory, "Monaco" temporarily rose to the third place in the league table, while "Rennes" remained in 9th place.
