Unexpected leaders in the national leagues of the great countries © EuroFootball.com

If the leadership of London's "Chelsea" in the English championship is not surprising to anyone, then in France it's "St Etienne", and in Germany, "Mainz" continues to surprise.

The situation in the national top leagues is presented on the official UEFA website.

Germany

The Bundesliga league table does not look as the bookmakers predicted - over the weekend neither Munich's "Bayern" nor Bremen's "Werder" won, and ambitious Gelsenkirchen's "Schalke" remains without points altogether.

After four rounds, the "Mainz" team leads with 12 points, leaving the defending champion "Bayern" behind by 7 points. In second place is "TSG Hoffenheim", and in third is Dortmund's "Borussia".

France

After a 28-year break, the leader position can be claimed by "Saint Etienne", who crushed "Montpellier" 3-0 over the weekend.

"Toulouse" fell to second place after a draw with "Monaco", and in third place is "Rennais", also with equal points.

Champion "Lyon" defeated "Arles" and achieved just their second victory of the season.

Italy

In Italy, after 3 rounds, "Cesena" unexpectedly leads, defeating "Lecce" and having 7 points. Two goals by Samuel Eto'o in the second half led Milan's "Inter" to victory over "Palermo", placing Rafael Benitez's team in second place with the same points.

"Milan" played a draw with "Catania", so the leaders are not Ronaldinho and company, but Verona's "Chievo", "Brescia" and Rome's "Lazio".

England

London's "Chelsea" scored not only 15 points in 5 matches, but also humiliated opponents' goalkeepers 21 times.

The closest pursuers - London's "Arsenal" and "Man Utd" - are already trailing by 4 points, while "Man City" in fourth place, along with London's "Tottenham", have a 7-point deficit.

Spain

Marius Stankevičius is currently only watching from the stands as his new team "Valencia" secures victories in the Spanish championship - after the third consecutive win, "Los Che" firmly lead, 2 points ahead of "Sevilla" and Madrid's "Real".

"Real" defeated "Real Sociedad" over the weekend, while "Barcelona", currently sixth, won against Madrid's "Atletico".

However, Lionel Messi suffered an injury, but he will return to the lineup in a few weeks.
