The new head coach of the Portuguese national team is Paulo Bento, replacing the dismissed Carlos Queiroz.

Until the end of 2009, the strategist who led the Lisbon Sporting club signed a two-year contract and will lead the national team until the end of the 2012 European Championship.

In the first two matches of the Old Continent Championship qualification cycle, Portugal managed to secure only one point - drawing with Cyprus and losing to Norway.

The country's football federation wanted charismatic Jose Mourinho to temporarily train the national team, with Bento to replace him later, but Real Madrid did not release the coach and the plans had to be adjusted.
