Former referee Byron Moreno was arrested for heroin smuggling in New York.

It is said that the retired referee from Ecuador tried to smuggle up to 6 kilograms of drugs in his underwear.

Moreno became most famous in 2002 when he refereed the World Cup round of 16 match between host South Korea and the Italian national team.

He infuriated the European representatives by not penalizing several fouls on the field, wrongly disallowing at least one goal for offside, and sending off Francesco Totti. Italy lost 1-2.

Later, Moreno was suspended for 20 matches, as in a match between "Liga Deportiva Universitaria de Quito" and "Barcelona Sporting Club of Guayaquil," he allowed an additional 13 minutes of play in the second half, contributing only 6 minutes. A winning goal was scored in the 11 minutes he played.
