FIFA medical department expert says that the face of top-level football is marred by "brutal" and "criminal" actions of players on the field.

Dr. Michel d'Hooghe expressed concern in an interview with the BBC about the increasing number of severe injuries caused by opponents' actions.

"Some footballers step onto the field simply to provoke an opponent's injury and thus ruin their career," said the Belgian.

"I have two eyes and can perfectly see what is happening - some actions are simply criminal."

D'Hooghe, who is the chairman of the FIFA Medical Committee, was contradicted by the head of the global players' union FIFPro, Theo van Seggelen: "I do not believe that among our 50 thousand members there is a single one who wants to deliberately injure another footballer."

D'Hooghe added that a huge problem is the referees' inability to notice and properly assess such incidents.
