On Friday, the UEFA Control and Disciplinary Committee imposed penalties on several clubs participating in European cup tournaments for inappropriate behavior of fans during matches.
AS Roma was punished for incidents during the UEFA Europa League match against "Partizan," where certain team supporters performed racist chants, threw objects, used flares, and clashed with the police. As a result, Roma will have to play one European tournament match at home behind closed doors.
This is already the third time that SS Lazio has been penalized for racist incidents. However, since the team has already finished participating in this season's UEFA Europa League, the punishment will have to be served in the future, when the club participates in a UEFA tournament again. Meanwhile, during the same match, Partizan fans threw flares for which the Serbian club received a 5200 euro fine.
Real Madrid was also punished for racist behavior by the team's fans. During the Champions League match against Bayer, Real Madrid supporters chanted racist slurs aimed at black players of the German team, and some fans even made Nazi gestures.
When deciding on the penalty, the Disciplinary Committee took into account that this incident was the first involving fans of the Madrid team and fined Real Madrid with 9780 euros.
PAOK, for whom fans threw flares and various objects during a match against Deportivo, received a much larger fine of 65,000 euros. UEFA based this decision on the general lack of security at the stadium and the fact that this problem has occurred multiple times.
AEK Athens received a similar penalty for their match against Porto. However, their fine was almost three times smaller at 22,800 euros. Lastly, the Belgian club Standard Liege was fined 13,000 euros for racist behavior by fans during a match against Utrecht. All clubs are allowed to appeal the sanctions until midnight on Monday.
