Strategist Sir Alex Ferguson admitted that Wayne Rooney wants to leave the team.
The experienced specialist stated that this news shocked and disappointed him, but denied any conflict with the striker. Furthermore, according to the coach, there is still time to change his mind.
"We are all puzzled, as we do not understand why Wayne wants to leave," said the Scot. "In mid-August, Board Chairman David Gill called me and said that Rooney will not sign a new contract.
"I was stunned. Just a few months ago he said he was playing for the best club in the world. I met with the footballer, but he repeated what his agent said - that he wants to play elsewhere."
This season Rooney has been plagued by major issues - a sex scandal with a prostitute emerged in the public eye at the beginning of autumn, clearly disturbing the striker who performed excellently last year but has only scored once this season.
