s expected, the award for the best European football player, the "Golden Ball," was won by the Ukrainian national team and club forward Andrei Shevchenko.

With 17 points in the vote, the 28-year-old striker left behind two team players - Brazilian-born Portuguese Deco, with 139 points, and Brazilian Ronaldinho, who had 133 points. Also included in the top ten were T.Henry, T.Zagorakis, Adriano, P.Nedved, W.Rooney, R.Carvalho, and R.Van Nistelrooy.

These were very successful years for A. Shevchenko. In the previous Italian league season, the Ukrainian scored 24 goals. This season, he already has 11 goals in Italy, as well as four scored representing the Ukrainian national team in the World Cup qualifying matches.

The winner of the "France Football" elections was chosen by European football journalists. This is the seventh time that a player from AC Milan has been selected as the best player on the old continent. Previous winners include Gianni Rivera (1969), Ruud Gullit (1987), Marco Van Basten (1988, 1989, 1992), and George Weah (1995).

Last year, this award was won by Czech Pavel Nedved, representing the Turin club.
