Rooney: I did not receive guarantees that the future composition of "Man Utd" will remain strong © EuroFootball.com

Attacker Wayne Rooney has stated that he wants to leave the club because he doubts whether he will be able to compete for trophies in the future.

The 24-year-old footballer, whose contract expires in the summer of 2012, admitted that he had spoken with "Man Utd" executive director David Gill, but denied that he informed coach Sir Alex Ferguson of his decision to leave in mid-August.

"When meeting with Gill, I asked him to assure me that in the future 'Man Utd' would be able to attract the highest league players. However, he could not guarantee me that the team's composition would be as strong as I would like in the future," Rooney said.

"I was curious to hear what Ferguson said at the press conference yesterday. I must admit, some things surprised me.

"I have always had immense respect for this club. How can one not respect it when looking at the amazing history and the impressive last six years that I have had the honor to experience as a player myself.

"Winning trophies is the most important thing for me - just like the team does with coach Ferguson. That's why I believe my questions were valid.

"Despite recent difficulties, I know that I will always be grateful to the coach. He is an amazing strategist and mentor who has helped me from the very first day in Manchester when I was just 18."

It is said that Rooney is interested in teams like "Man City", Madrid's "Real", "Barcelona", London's "Chelsea" and others.
