Michael Owen admits he would consider retiring if no offer to extend his expiring summer contract is made.
The 30-year-old footballer, plagued by injuries, could become a free agent.
"I would really like to stay, but I need to talk to the coach about long-term prospects," Owen told The Sun. "I can score goals at this level for many more years, so I want to play for a top club.
"Would I agree to move to a less ambitious Premier League team? I don't know. I could be successful there, but I would have fewer opportunities and that would give me less pleasure. I don't think my style suits teams that are struggling."
