Mascherano: "Liverpool" unwillingness to invest prompted me to leave © EuroFootball.com

Javier Mascherano stated that he decided to leave in the summer because the former club owners were not willing to invest in strengthening the team.

The Argentine moved to Barcelona for over 20 million euros.

"While 'Man Utd', 'Man City', and 'Chelsea' spared no money for footballers, 'Liverpool' did nothing because they don't have money," Mascherano told The Sun.

"The situation is clear to me. When you want to compete for titles, you need to have a well-assembled team. That wasn't the case at Liverpool."

He continued: "That's why we didn't make it to the Champions League. Of course, it's not easy to leave a team you've represented for four years. Especially since everyone treated me so well. But I realized that my time there was over."
