Alexander Frei, the most productive player in the history of the Swiss national team, will end his career in the national team at the end of the season.

Doubts about the player's future arose after last month's European Championship qualifying match, where Frei was booed by the fans.

The 31-year-old striker showed with his gesture that it was the last straw that broke the camel's back.

"I took into account many positive requests, wishes, and advice from people who urged me to stay," said Frei. "I also didn't forget those who said that my time has passed. I make this decision not based on emotions and leave enough time for young footballers to find a place in the national team."
