One of the biggest football clubs in the world, Madrid, officially appointed Italian Arrigo Sacchi as the club's director of sport on Tuesday.
The 58-year-old Sacchi previously coached Madrid's "Atletico," "Milan," "Parma," and the Italian national team, but due to excessive stress, he ended his coaching career in 2001 and worked as a director at "Parma" club for the past three years.
Recently, there were rumors that the Italian could take over as the head coach of "Real," but the rumors did not come true as the club's president, Florentino Perez, appointed him as the director of sport. Emilio Butragueno, who previously held this position, is now the club's vice-president.
"I want to achieve what I managed to do over the past two and a half years," Sacchi told the newspaper "Gazzetta dello Sport." "These are specific duties related to coordinating players, strategists, and coaches. I will also take care of the medical staff management, as 'Real' wants to reform this area, and I will be responsible for the transfer policy."
Many attribute the failures of "Real" in recent years to incorrect player purchases, or in short, transfer policy, and it may be that Perez made this move in search of change.
The Italian press reports that one of Italy's most talented players could also move to Madrid with Sacchi. He finished last season in second place in the list of most goals scored in "Serie A." Gilardino could replace Fernando Morientes in the team, who wishes to leave and has already received an offer from another club.
