London attacker Didier Drogba was infected with the life-threatening insect-borne disease malaria, the English club reports.
However, the Ivory Coast national team footballer is already taking medication and recovering quickly.
Due to the virus, Drogba missed matches against Birmingham's Aston Villa and Moscow's Spartak, but in Saturday's match against Liverpool, despite his high temperature, he came out onto the field in the second half.
Only after all this, on Monday, it was revealed after blood tests that the forward had contracted malaria.
According to Chelsea manager Carlo Ancelotti, Drogba likely got infected during a few days of rest.
