Milan's strategist Rafael Benitez after the defeat in the city derby stated that the match plan was ruined by an early penalty kick.
The only goal from the penalty spot was scored by Milan's forward Zlatan Ibrahimovic in the 5th minute.
"I don't think we lacked character," said the Spaniard. "The team tried, but Milan scored a penalty very early, and later committed many fouls to defend themselves.
"It wasn't easy to play against a team that played so intensively and focused on quick attacks. Too often we lost the ball in the middle of the field."
He continued: "The penalty changed our plan. We wanted to wait and create more space behind their defenders, but Milan took the lead and we had to attack more. It wasn't easy."
Meanwhile, Milan coach Massimiliano Allegri rejoiced in the victory: "We defended well and deserved the win.
"At one moment it seemed like we would soon score a second goal, but then we slowed down the pace because fatigue was felt. The team played solidly.
This is an important victory, especially considering that it was a derby. It will boost our self-esteem."
