One of the leaders of Bayern Munich, Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, claims that midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger will not be sold, even if he refuses to extend his contract.

The footballer's contract expires in the summer of 2012, and coach Louis van Gaal publicly stated that selling him would be the most rational solution if negotiations for an extension fail.

"I have always said that we want to extend Bastian's contract. That is the direction we are working in," Rummenigge said.

"He is one of the most important players in the team, if not the most important. Even if we fail to reach an agreement, Schweinsteiger will remain at the club until June 30, 2012. He will definitely not leave sooner."

Bayern recently signed long-term contracts with other key players - Franck Ribery, Philipp Lahm, Thomas Mueller, and Holger Badstuber.
