On November 29th, the El Clasico match will be the first one in the 21st century to take place on a Monday, writes fcbarcelona.lt.
However, the history of the Spanish championship shows that this is not the first time that the giants of La Liga meet on such an unusual day. In 1964 and 1972, "Barcelona" and "Real" also faced each other on Mondays.
On March 30, 1964, which was also a Monday, success smiled upon the team from the Spanish capital. Jose Antonio Zaldua scored a goal for the Catalans, but the opponents managed to score twice - precise strikes from Paco Gento and Ferenc Puskas gave the victory to the "Real" team.
On April 3, 1972, also a Monday, "Barcelona" celebrated victory. This time, the only goal of the match was scored by Juan Manuel Asensi.
By the way, in both of these seasons, 1964 and 1972, "Real" won the Spanish championship. In both competitions, the Catalan club fell behind the winners by four points.
"Barcelona" and "Real" have played each other on Tuesday and even on Wednesday. Out of the 80 El Clasico matches played in Barcelona, 51 matches took place on Sundays, 25 on Saturdays, 2 on Mondays, 1 on Tuesdays, and 1 on Wednesdays.
In 1968, the match was moved from Sunday to Tuesday due to the sudden and unexpected death of Barcelona defender Julio Cesar Benitez. The 27-year-old Uruguayan died from complications of food poisoning. He was buried in a cemetery near the Camp Nou stadium.
That time, the postponed match on Tuesday ended with a score of 1:1.
In the 1999-2000 season, the "Barcelona" and "Real" match took place on a Wednesday, but such an unusual day did not surprise anyone that time. The date of the match was simply scheduled in the fixture list. The match also ended in a draw - 2:2.
