The team's vice-captain suffered a shoulder injury in Sunday's match against Tottenham.

"It's sad when it happens in the 450th match in the English Championship," said the team's manager Roy Hodgson. "We will have to do without him and Steven Gerrard, who are the lifeblood of the club."

Gerrard will be unable to play for about three weeks.
