The national broadcaster of Great Britain, BBC, recognized Ghana's national team striker Asamoah Gyan as the best African football player of 2010.

Representing the club "Sunderland", Gyan received more than half of the votes and significantly outperformed his compatriot Andre Ayew, as well as representatives from Ivory Coast Yaya Toure and Didier Drogba, and Cameroon's Samuel Eto'o.

"I am very happy, I can't believe it," said the winner. "I am very thankful to those fans who voted for me."

He added: "Winning this award is not easy, because the competitors are excellent football players."

Under Gyan's leadership, Ghana's national team reached the final of the African Cup of Nations, and in the World Cup held in the summer he scored three goals, helping the team reach the quarter-finals.

However, it was in that very match that Gyan failed to convert an 11-meter penalty kick against Uruguay, which could have opened the way to the semi-finals.
